Han Feng's final table run in the World Series of Poker Main Event came to an end in brutal fashion.
After starting proceedings near the bottom of the chip counts on Day 9, Feng expertly maneuvered his way through the first of three frames of final table play to more than quadruple his stack.
Some well-timed bluffs, coupled with two clutch double-ups, saw him bag up the second-largest stack in play. And with only seven players remaining, Feng came into Day 10 with a very real shot at poker's most prestigious prize.
The departures of Jamie Shaevel and Rami Hammoud in 7th and 6th places, respectively, brought Feng two additional pay ladders. While he sent a full double up to Lauri Saaskilahti that crippled his stack, he was still in the running.
And then disaster struck.
'Particularly violent way to go out'
The hand started well enough. Feng looked down at
first to act and fired out a standard minimum raise to 6M.
When the action folded around to him, Saaskilahti opted to three-bet to 50M with
– more than enough to put Feng all-in.
Michael Gagliano fled the scene from the small blind, but Greg Mueller faced a tough spot in the big blind with
. Eventually, after a long while in the tank, Mueller sent his pocket pair into the muck.
Feng, on the other hand, called instantly.
Finland's Lauri Saaskilahti put a brutal beat on Han Feng to eliminate him from the WSOP Main Event final table. With the cards on their backs, he was a huge favorite to double up and get right back into contention – even more so on the
flop as he held the ace of diamonds and Saaskilahti was drawing to a one-outer. The
turn added six outs to his arsenal, leaving Feng and his rail holding their collective breath as they awaited the river.
The
completed the board – and Saaskilahti's unlikely runner-runner straight – to put an end to Feng's run. The Finnish rail erupted into celebration as the card came down.
"Primordial screams as a barbaric end to Hang Fen's Main Event, vanquished in fifth," said Ali Nejad from the commentary booth.
"Congratulations, Han," said Nejad's comms partner Nick Schulman. "What an epic run, particularly violent way to go out having the lone diamond."
In a post-elimination interview with WSOP sideline reporter Jeff Platt, Feng was remarkably unfazed by the brutal beat.
"It's fine, man," he said. "It happens. I'm all good."
Feng picked up $2,250,000 for his fifth-place finish.
