One of the most tired but true poker cliches is that you can't win the World Series of Poker Main Event on the first day, but you can damned sure lose it. If you want to win poker's most coveted title, you best pack a lunch. Actually, pack more than a week's worth of lunches and tell your family you love them. You're not going to be home for a while.
You think World Cup stoppage time is out of hand or MLB baseball games take too long? Practice your slow breathing and settle in for the long road to winning the WSOP Main event gold bracelet.
No world title comes quickly
In this summer's World Cup, officials have done what they can to limit stoppage time and extra time to cut back on the inflated average from 2022. This year's matches have been averaging just over 96 minutes in length. The winning country will end up playing eight matches and rack up more that 12 hours on the pitch.
The PGA Masters isn't officially a world championship, but it's the game's most coveted title. When Rory McIlroy won the green jacket last spring, he spent a little more than 19 total hours over four days walking Augusta National before finally sinking his last putt.
In last year's World Series (of Baseball), it took the LA Dodgers all seven games to knock off the Toronto Blue Jays. While not every MLB World Series goes seven games and the MLB has instituted many new rules to speed up games, the 2025 World Series took 25 hours and 33 minutes of game time from first pitch to last out.
No title comes easy or quickly, but when looking at total time to a title, one World Series looks a lot different than the other.

Wanna be a WSOP champ? Bring a seat cushion
Every World Series of Poker Main Event is different, but there are a lot of things about it you can predict. The tournament is made up of gradually increasing blind levels geared toward forcing opponents to play against each other more aggressively over time. Each of those levels last for two hours and on most days this year, the players will play five levels / ten hours. That time doesn't include scheduled bathroom breaks or the scheduled dinner break.
The current math suggests players will play 30 hours over the course of three days before they even have a chance to win a prize. At some point early on the fourth day, the surviving players will get their first taste at a payday. But after that, it's back to work, because whoever is left at that point won't have even reached the halfway point.
In recent years, it has taken between 41 and 44 two-hour levels to find a WSOP champion. For the purposes of the graphic above, we settled on 42. Your mileage may vary. In any case, the 2026 World Series of Poker champ can expect to spend more than 80 hours in a seat between now and when they don the championship bracelet.
I mean...celebration aside, why do you think the first thing champions do after winning is stand up?
