Phil Hellmuth's prowess in the poker tournament streets is well-known and hard to argue against. With tournament results stretching back to the late 1980s, the 17-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner has stood the test of time and enjoyed success throughout the entirety of his career. Hellmuth's style of play may be unorthodox, especially in the solver era, yet he makes it work.
But does Hellmuth's approach translate to success in the cash game arena? Well, that's the exact question Marc Goone – founder of Hungry Horse Poker – asks in the video above. And his answer might surprise you.
"Over $30M in tournament earnings and the same giant leak as the biggest fish at your local $2/$5 game," Goone claims.
Hellmuth's cash game leaks
"So, what is the leak?" Goone asks. "Fear."
In Goone's opinion, Hellmuth has five major leaks when it comes to cash games – all of which he believes stem from the same source: fear. Whether it's the fear of tough pre-flop decisions or the fear of getting pushed around by opponents, Goone posits that Hellmuth "plays scared," and allows irrational thinking to dominate his decision-making in a cash game format.
Goone provides examples of each leak he has identified in Hellmuth's game and breaks down several hands to illustrate his points. At the same time, he teaches viewers not only how to remove these leaks from their own game, but also how to identify and then exploit similar leaks in their opponents' play.
In his latest video, Marc Goone identifies a number of leaks in Phil Hellmuth's game – eating at the table not included. While Goone certainly takes aim at Hellmuth as a punching bag, he does so with educational intentions at heart. Realistically, Hellmuth is far from the only player who suffers from these leaks – he's just the most visible.
If you, like Hellmuth, find yourself influenced by fear on the felt, look no further for the solution – Goone’s breakdown offers strategies to help players recognize and address fear-driven mistakes in their own cash game play.
