On Thursday, action in Event #9 of the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series stop in Jeju, South Korea continued as the remaining players returned to whittle the field down to a final table. From a field of 124 entrants, only 68 managed to survive the Day 1 onslaught with the continued aim of laying claim to a slice of the $19,200,000 prize pool.
Amongst the hopefuls was five-time Triton Champion Phil Ivey, who had yet to find his form in Jeju. While Ivey earned a slight return on his investment in Events #3 and #6, a final table appearance – and the substantial prize money that accompanies it – had eluded him.
Ivey hunts sixth title
After starting Day 2 on a fresh stack, Ivey managed to spin his 20 big blinds into a workable stack as the field thinned around him. When the money bubble burst, Ivey was one of the 20 players on the right side of the equation. Still, with the blinds on the rise and a ways to go before reaching the last nine, Ivey's stack hovered right around the danger zone and he was far from guaranteed a place at the final table.
With 10 players remaining, Ivey found himself sitting on a stack of just 2.5 big blinds – one-fifth of which were forced into the middle to pay his small blind. Ivey, facing a raise from Dan Smith and a call from Joao Vieira, looked down at
and moved his remaining chips across the betting line to put his tournament life on the line. Ben Tollerene, next to act in the big blind, peeled
and moved all-in over the top himself. Smith fled the scene, but Viera had played his
slowly and, with a covering stack, decided to run it.
As you can see in the video above, the
runout failed to improve either Tollerene or Ivey, leaving Vieira to scoop in the massive pot. While the final table was set for nine players, the double knockout saw only eight players advance.
Bryn Kenney notches 5th Triton title
Following his close call in Event #8, Bryn Kenney wasted no time in returning to a Triton final table. While Event #10: $50,000 NLH Bounty Quattro Turbo wasn't quite as big of a tournament, there was still plenty of money up for grabs in both placement prizes and bounty prizes.
The turbo structure of the event, coupled with the incentive to hunt bounties, made for an incredibly fast pace of play. As such, the final table arrived in short order with only three players sitting on stacks of more than 20 big blinds. Jon Ander Vallinas led the final nine, but Kenney and Michael Soyza weren't far off. Brandon Wilson, Leon Sturm, and Yang Chongxian each held a middling stack, but without much wriggle room to operate as Erik Seidel, Stephen Chidwick, and Chance Kornuth all had less than 10 big blinds.

(Clockwise from top left: Leon Sturm, Brandon Wilson, Bryn Kenney, Stephen Chidwick, Erik Seidel, Yang Chongxian, Jon Ander Vallinas, Chance Kornuth, Michael Soyza)The three short stacks – Kornuth, Chidwick, and Seidel – bowed out quickly as each of them unsuccessfully took a shot at doubling up. After taking a bad beat with
against Soyza's
, Sturm was left with just a single big blind and Kenney seized upon the opportunity to score the knockout and add another bounty to his coffers.
Wilson fell next when his
failed to improve against Chongxian's
and Soyza followed suit soon after when his
couldn't hold against Kenney's
.
With only three players remaining, Kenney had momentum – and the chip lead – on his side. Chongxian sent his five big blinds into the middle with
and Kenney called it off – somehow ahead with
. As the runout failed to improve either player, Kenney scored the knockout and the bounty with his ten-high holding.
Bryn Kenney added a fifth Triton title and more than $1M to his resume with a win in Event #10. The heads-up battle between Kenney and Vallinas lasted just one hand as the Spanish professional moved all-in over the top of a raise with
. Kenney called it off with
and locked up his fifth Triton title on a queen-high flop.
