Pop quiz, hotshot. You’re in the big blind on the stone bubble of a WSOP Circuit Main Event with less than two big blinds behind.
A player has moved all-in and been called in front of you. You look down at your hand and see ace-king suited.
What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO???
While not the dire situation teased by Dennis Hopper in Speed, as referenced above, this is the scenario that faced a player in Day 1A of the WSOP Circuit Main Event at Thunder Valley, and is one of the more stressful spots you could face in a poker tournament.
We spoke to the ‘Keanu Reeves’ of the situation along with some high-level analysts and coaches to break down one of the most interesting moments of that tournament.
A bomb on a bus? Maybe not, but ace-king in the big blind on the stone bubble can be a scary sight. The hand in question
We’re going to set up the hand without spoiling the result until the end, so stick with us. But if you realllllllly want to know what happened before we break it all down, you can see it in our Instant Live feed from Thunder Valley.
It is the stone bubble. 36 players remain, with Day 2 and a $3,430 min-cash for all who bag up. No bag, no min-cash.
Yao Zhao moves all-in from the hijack for 9.7 big blinds, and Matthew Kreeger does as well from the button, for slightly more, with 10.8 big blinds.
Yao Zhao was first to be at risk in the hand.Jeff Day is in the big blind. He started the hand with 3.9 big blinds, but one is in the middle for the big blind ante, and another is his big blind. He has 1.9 bb behind.
And he looks down at ace-king suited.
So, the question is, if you’re in Day’s position, do you commit your final chips in this situation?
The math says it’s a no-brainer call, but you could fold and possibly still make the money.
Jeff Day was faced with this very tough bubble decision. If you do fold, either Kreeger eliminates Zhao, and you slide into the money with 1.9 big blinds, though with virtually no chance of earning anything further.
Or Zhao wins the hand, leaving Kreeger with less than 1bb, and if he and you both fold for another orbit, Kreeger will be forced all-in before you are.
But if you call off your final chips, you could potentially win the pot and have 7.7 big blinds, while the above scenarios become the result of the side pot.
So, what do you do? Follow the math and risk it for a better Day 2 chance, or fold and hope to slide into the money with crumbs for Day 2?
Day’s thoughts and reaction
We spoke to Day about his thought process in the hand, and his initial reaction sounds about perfect.
“Honestly, I looked at the ace-king and said, ‘Oh f*** me.’ Part of this whole thing was in the moment; we had been over an hour on the bubble, and there had been all of two all-ins and calls over that whole time, and that’s just unreasonable. When I looked at the ace-king suited, the thought was I most likely have the best hand or have the opportunity to make the best hand in a fair fashion.”
Day in happier times when his tournament life wasn't potentially at risk.Day, a ‘serious recreational’ player, has over $300,000 in Hendon Mob-recorded tournament earnings and a RunGood trophy win among his accolades, and says his improved study has changed how he thought about what to do in that situation.
“Old me would have snap-folded. New me said throw caution to the wind and go with the percentages.”
When we spoke to Day about the hand, it had been 36 hours since, and he had spoken to as many people as we had, and gotten a similarly diverse round of analysis.
“It’s endlessly fascinating to me how much engagement it’s generated. I've talked to so many people, pros, recs, regs, and it’s all over the place; everybody’s like 50-50. One person who I think is going to be 100% ‘fold’ is 100% ‘call’ and vice versa.”
Coaches and a champion weigh in
We asked a pair of top-level tournament players and coaches, Jonathan Little and Matt Affleck of PokerCoaching.com, and a former Circuit Main Event champion at Thunder Valley with a strong math and GTO-based play style, Jaime Haletky, for their thoughts on the hand as well, and this trio provided equally divided opinions.
Jonathan Little: fold
“When you are very short on the bubble, you have to realize that you are probably not going to win the tournament.
"Most of your expected profit will come from sneaking into the money. So, even though ace-king suited is a premium hand and would be an easy call if there were no payout implications, on the exact bubble, it is likely best to fold and hope to sneak into the money.”
PokerCoaching.com founder Jonathan Little felt that a fold was prudent.Matt Affleck: fold or call
“To be honest, I don’t know. I wouldn’t feel too bad either way. [Making the money] is definitely not guaranteed. The hijack is going to have a good hand, and the button’s going to have a good hand, and the button, if they win, could still spin it up with one big blind if they lose.
"I don’t know, I stopped working hard on these types of spots. Probably call. People will probably prove it’s wrong; I don’t know. I would fold ace-king off.”
PokerCoaching.com coach Matt Affleck was right down the middle on what to do in this spot.Jaime Haletky: call
“It depends on a lot of things. You could do a lot of math that might optimize the value of it. I think playing for the final table is so much more meaningful than just to make the money.
"Unless you’re a pro, this is still something you’re doing for fun, and it’s not fun to not play to win. You want to play to win. I wouldn’t hesitate. I want to take that opportunity to get a stack and win the tournament, not min-cash.”
WSOPC Thunder Valley Main Event champion Jaime Haletky thought a call was the obvious decision. The result: he called
Day made the call with his ace-king suited and was very live to win the pot, make Day 2, and the money.
Day:
(2.9bb)
Yao Zhao:
(9.7bb)
Matthew Kreeger:
(10.8bb)
Zhao was the heavy favorite to win the main pot and survive with his queens against Kreeger’s jacks. If his queens held, Zhao would be up to 24.4bb, while Kreeger would indeed be left with just 0.9bb. Day would be eliminated.
But instead, Kreeger found a jack on the flop, making a winning set to eliminate Zhao and Day, with neither player making the money or advancing to Day 2.
In hindsight, had Day folded, he would have made Day 2 with his 1.9bb and the $3,430 min-cash.
Day re-entered the tournament on Day 1B, but again did not advance to Day 2. There would be no Day 2 either for Zhao, while Kreeger used his two-outer on the bubble to build a contending Day 2 stack before being eliminated in 45th place for $3,910.
While Kreeger was the only player of the three to cash, they each provided one of the most interesting and talked-about hands of the tournament.
