Long before Michael Gagliano was a four-time WSOP bracelet winner and 2026 WSOP Main Event final table qualifier, he was sending flyers on AOL Instant Messenger for poker tournaments at his mom's house.
"I don't know how she let me do this," he told Craig Tapscott, who caught up with the Rockaway, New Jersey native in the lead-up to the August finale.
"I used to come home from college and transform my mom's house. We'd move all the furniture, and we'd put three to four poker tables and have these tournaments once a season with thirty, forty people."
The living room setup is a long way from the WSOP Main Event final table, where Gagliano will sit down with a shot at $10 million and the lifetime title of world champion. It's also a far cry from where Gagliano started, before Texas hold'em was cool.
Hold'em takes over the world
Gagliano sets a casual scene of friends with a common interest in gambling on card games. "This was probably 2001, before Moneymaker."
He already had a regular poker night, but the games were closer to what you might find on a trip up to the cabin, or at a $4/8 mixed meetup.
"My friend was getting into Texas hold'em for whatever reason, and he used to pick it for dealer's choice, but we would play one hand of each game. He would pick Texas hold'em, and we'd say, 'Why are you picking this? This game is terrible.'"
Gagliano's journey to the final table started at his mom's house. One hand of Texas hold'em is very boring. "Most of the time, no one had anything, and there was just a lot of folding or one person raised, and everybody folded. We didn't get it. It didn't click."
Once TV poker came along, the attitude changed.
"We were getting more into it and understanding what the game actually was at a strategic level. We weren't playing at that deep of a level, but we got it at that point. We started just playing Texas hold'em a lot more."
Now, it all starts to come full circle, as it has for many final table qualifiers before Gagliano. One tournament turned into several, and soon Gagliano was a hardcore poker fan.
"We'd have card night and watch the Main Event. We paid for — I think it was 2007 — when they did the final table live on pay-per-view. We paid for it. My friends came over, and we watched it. It was slower than we thought. But it was a crazy final table, so we loved it. It just lasted hours and hours."

Not just another tournament
This year, Gagliano is the one who everyone is watching, and living vicariously through, as he chases the dream on ESPN. It's surreal, and it's certainly not just another tournament.
"It's definitely a dream. I think Shaun [Deeb] took some flak for saying things like, 'It's just another tournament.' Because it's not, right? It's a special tournament, and everyone's playing a little differently because it's under the lights, under the cameras, and the money is bigger. It's a once-in-a-lifetime shot."
Shaun Deeb played the Main Event like any other tournament, but now he's out. "But on the other hand, I understand where [Deeb] is coming from. You're just getting dealt two cards. You're just playing a hand just like you are. And like, yeah, maybe people are playing slightly differently because of X, Y, and Z, but you can adjust to that and just still play your game."
Part of the adjustment, for Gagliano, is balancing the reality of playing final table with the surreal feeling of being the center of attention. How do you answer messages from every poker player you've ever met while trying to prepare? How do you prepare? Should you even prepare at all?

We've all daydreamed about what we'd do with the time to prepare for the biggest poker game of our lives. You can hire coaches, trainers, chefs, and even a new set of friends. This year's WSOP Main Event final table is different, and there is a considerable wait before the show starts. How do you use it?
Gagliano answered the question to a friend earlier in the summer.
"I said at the time I wouldn't do anything. I would probably watch the streams and not study or do anything."
"It's a mistake to go in thinking you're gonna become an expert at anything in two weeks."In reality, Gagliano is still doing a little bit of prep. "But I'm not really doing a ton."
"I think it's a mistake to like go in thinking you're gonna become an expert at anything in two weeks. If you don't have the skill set already, you're not gonna have it in two weeks.
"I'm just going over some of the spots. I'm definitely watching the streams. I've been making my way through them just for completeness, just to understand how people got there, see some of the hands they played, see if there's anything I can pick up."
Play your best and make the best decisions, Gagliano says. Can't lose.
"I do well, I do well. If I do poorly, I lose. That's poker. I've been fortunate enough that I've had some hands work out for me this tournament, and I'm still here."
