There’s something a little different about the way Justin Arnwine sees a poker table – and remembers it.
His results are certainly unusual. Arnwine has won 156 live events, along with more than 2,600 first-place finishes in online SNGs and MTTs. This week, Arnwine hit the top of the GPI leaderboard as the #1-ranked player in the 2026 GPI Mid-Major Player of the Year race.
On the surface, those numbers seem absurd. Yet Arnwine puts his success down to a healthy combination of bravado and humility.
But there's something else at work: an unusual visual memory that Arnwine believes he's had since childhood.

Justin Arnwine defended his RGPS title at the 2026 Maryland Main Event – and shared how many bullets it took.An elephant never forgets
To understand Arnwine's game, you have to go back to the beginning – when he was five years old.
After breaking his leg, he spent much of the year immobilized in a full-body cast and spent most of his time watching TV. Back then, options were limited, and one VHS tape became a particular favorite.
“I must have watched Dumbo a thousand times,” says Arnwine. “I never was able to memorize the dialogue, which is weird, but I could remember every single screen. Every single time it switched scenes, I would know what the next one was.”
By the time Arnwine could walk again, he knew that something about his memory had changed.
“It was like if something happened on Tuesday, when I woke up on Wednesday, I remembered what it was – I would be able to recall that memory for the next decade.”
Arnwine firmly believes that this unusual visual memory has become one of his greatest weapons on the felt. When quizzed, he can still remember random hands from 2006 and says watching just a handful of showdowns can sometimes tell him what he needs to know about an opponent.
“I can get so much more information off of just witnessing one showdown than I think other people can. Once I see how someone behaves preflop, flop, turn, and river, I’m definitely not forgetting it in that 10-hour window that we play that day.”
That innate ability is only part of the equation behind his success.
Justin Arnwine was inspired by the High Roller documentary featuring three-time WSOP Main Event winner Stu Ungar.
Finding the patterns
Arnwine is a relentless student of the game.
He once studied an entire streamed final table featuring two-time WPT champion James Carroll, then mimicked Carroll’s approach when the two met at the final table. Arnwine went on to win that event.
Even more impressive was Arnwine's admission that he watched thousands of hands during COVID played by the groundbreaking Pluribus poker AI against some of the world’s best players, while searching for patterns and concepts he could steal for his own game.
He's also willing to fire bullets. A lot of them.
His unapologetic approach to re-entry tournaments has attracted plenty of criticism, but Arnwine is unrepentant and points to his results.
And his response to those who want re-entry tournaments eliminated? “Please ban them so I can win twice as much.”
