The World Series of Poker Super Circuit Canada Main Event in Montreal played down to a winner on Thursday.
After well over 12 hours of intense final-table action, including a heads-up battle that lasted just over an hour, Canada's own Mayukh Chakraborty emerged victorious to claim the Super Circuit Main Event ring and the CAD $1,500,000 first-place prize. Chakraborty defeated countryman Benjamin Veenstra during heads-up play to close out the win.
Chakraborty began the final table as the chip leader and went wire-to-wire in a dominant display to keep the Super Circuit Canada Main Event title in its home country.
Final table action
The first elimination at the final table came just a few hands into play. Chance Kornuth, founder of Chip Leader Coaching and an ACR Poker Team Pro, picked up
in the cutoff and made a standard open-raise.
Robert Renaud peeled
in the big blind and fired in a 3-bet. Kornuth responded with a 4-bet before Renaud understandably shipped his entire stack into the middle.
Kornuth snap-called and the
runout saw him notch the first elimination of the day.
Deven Lane bowed out next, running
into Chakraborty's . After raising pre-flop and picking up Chakraborty as a lone caller, Lane check-jammed on a
flop – only to see the bad news as his opponent called and rolled over the slow-played aces.
The turn and river completed the board to send Lane to the payout desk.
The final nine contenders in the WSOP Super Circuit Canada Main Event. The next to fall was Parth Mansukh who committed the last of his chips with in a blind versus blind confrontation against Kornuth. Unfortunately for the Canadian, Kornuth found
in the big blind and had an easy call. The
runout improved neither player and Kornuth's ace-high was good enough to claim the pot and the elimination.
Brazil's Felipe Baraky went out in sixth place, committing the majority of his 22 big blinds with from the button. Chakraborty asked for the rest of it after finding in the big blind and Baraky obliged.
The
flop was a spicy one as Baraky picked up a pair and the nut flush draw while Chakraborty connected with top set. The
turn and river changed nothing and Baraky's run came to an end.
Jonathan Bussieres took a big swing when he 3-bet for most of his stack from the big blind with in the face of an open from Chakraborty and a call from Kornuth in the small blind.
Chakraborty mucked his cards, but Kornuth called off the 30 big blind shove with and had Buessieres dominated. The
runout saw both players improve to top pair, but Kornuth had the better kicker.
Chakraborty closes
Kornuth's run came to an end in fourth place after a blind versus blind confrontation with Chakraborty saw both players get the chips in with a pocket pair.
Kornuth's
was in bad shape against Chakraborty's and the
runout left the latter with a massive chip lead headed into three-handed play.
Benjamin Veenstra finished runner-up in the WSOP Super Circuit Canada Main Event. The UK's Jack Salter bowed out in third place when his
was cracked by Chakraborty's – leaving the two remaining Canadians to battle on during the heads-up portion of play.
In the final clash between the two, Veenstra committed the last of his chips with and Chakraborty called it off with . The flop was clean enough for Veenstra and his king-high was well out in front.
The turn was a dagger, however, as Chakraborty found second pair to make the best hand. Veenstra was left drawing to a three-outer that failed to materialize on the river.
